B-113  Barite on Petrified Wood  $35  SOLD

Puerco Ridge, Navajo County, Arizona

10 x 5.5 x 2.3 cm.

When one thinks about petrified wood, one rarely thinks about accessory minerals that can be found associated with the petrified wood.  These remarkable specimens were found in the spring of 2008 by my friend and insatiable digger, Ken Gochenour.  This fine specimen features blades up to 2 cm. of the mineral Barite in a parallel growth and in bundles on a manganese oxide-coated piece of petrified wood.  I was so impressed with these specimens that I purchased every single one that he had with him when I saw him.  A great specimen for any collector of petrified wood, Arizona minerals, or just mineral specimens in general.

B-114  Barite and Calcite on Petrified Wood  $35

Puerco Ridge, Navajo County, Arizona

6.8 x 5.5 x 1.8 cm.

When one thinks about petrified wood, one rarely thinks about accessory minerals that can be found associated with the petrified wood.  These remarkable specimens were found in the spring of 2008 by my friend and insatiable digger, Ken Gochenour.  This fine specimen features wheat-sheaf-like bundles of the mineral Barite to 1.5 cm. on top of a layer of spongy-looking Calcite that fluoresces red when illuminated under SWUV light.  Under the Calcite, a layer of manganese oxide coats this specimen of petrified wood.  I was so impressed with these specimens that I purchased every single one that he had with him when I saw him.  A great specimen for any collector of petrified wood, Arizona minerals, or just mineral specimens in general.

C-134  Calcite  $35

Er Rachidia Province, Morocco, between Taouz and Algerian border

7 x 3.1 x 3.6 cm.

Continuing our saga through the deserts of north Africa, here we are offering a specimen that I picked up just last week: a stalactite-like stack of interpenetrating crystals of Calcite, which are lightly-included by sand.  The contrast between the sand color and the orange-red portions of this mineral specimen make it all the more interesting.

Here's an example of the great diversity of pseudomorphs.  These well-formed, hoppered crystals of Gypsum after unusually large Halite crystals are from a location that has now been permanently closed for over six years.  While never abundant when they could be collected, they are very hard to come by these days.

G-070  Garnet variety Spessartine with Smoky Quartz  $130  SOLD

Lechang Mine, Guangdong Province, China

9.3 x 7.2 x 3.1 cm.

These Spessartines are definitely in the upper echelon of Garnet specimens. For the past 8-9 years Chinese Garnets (especially the specimens from Fujian) have been quite abundant. But the really killer specimens have been too few and hard to come by. These gemmy Garnets have a luster that has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. This specimen also features a 6 millimeter crystal of Pyrite embedded in the left center of the specimen.  Another plus is the striking orange color, much like the famous Spessartines from the world famous Little 3 mine in Ramona, California.

Q-151  Quartz with Graphite inclusions  $215

Cong Li, Hunan Province, China

10.3 x 3.6 x 2.5 cm.

Here we have a large, incredibly gemmy Quartz crystal with numerous inclusions of Graphite measuring up to 2 cm. in size.  It is incredibly difficult to convey in a photograph just how glassy these crystals really are.  As far as I am concerned, these are the most interesting Quartz crystals that I have seen come from China. Graphite inclusions in Quartz are very rare, and even more so, in a Quartz crystal that is so glassy and lustrous.
