AD-108  Calcite and Quartz Geode  $55  SOLD

Idar-Oberstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

14 x 9.5 x 4.7 cm.

This large Geode features numerous gray scalenohedral crystals of Calcite that are partially covered by a second generation of smaller, white, Calcites on a bed of sparkly Quartz crystals.  The area surrounding the twin cities of Idar & Oberstein gained notoriety for the fantastic Agates, Quartz and Amethyst lined geodes discovered there in the mid 1500's. By the beginning of the 1800's the production of material had fallen to a small fraction of what was found in its heyday.  The world center of the high-end of the lapidary crafts is still based in Idar-Oberstein, though the rough material to work on is now imported from elsewhere.  Specimens from this classic location are prized by European collectors and very little material makes it to the United States.
